You might not have heard of a lift chair until one was suggested to you by your back care specialist, or you saw one advertised on TV, but now that you have it is important to know that there are a number of different types of lift chair. What type you need varies depending on your particular aches, pains or injuries and option range from quite simple recliner-like chairs all the way up to chairs offering unlimited positions, with all angles possible.

The most basic chairs can be found at nearly any furniture retail store and can help those who do not suffer from particular disabilities but rather have trouble due to pregnancy or other temporary strains. These recliner style chairs will typically allow you to select up to two different positions to sit in both of which must be less than 45 degrees. Such angles are perfect for sitting and reading a book or watching the television. However such chairs are not suitable for sleeping, and so if you want a chair for this, then you should continue to read below as we look at some of the other chairs on the market which do offer good sleeping positions.

Next up the scale of potential lift chairs are the so called three-position chairs. First, these chairs offer a greater range of motion, typically allowing you to go almost flat, which means that the user can sleep in the chair, in a strongly supported position. Second, they also allow the chair to be raised or lowered which facilitates easier movement in and out of the chair. This is particularly good for those suffering with arthritis. These chairs also tend to have hand held controls meaning that they can be operated by the user without the need to get up or reach of stationary controls elsewhere.

Finally, there are the chairs which offer infinite positions. These work with two separate motors, with the extra one in the footrest which allows you to create a so called 'zero gravity' position, with your legs elevated above the height of your chest. This allows for increased air flow, relief of back stress and a reduced load on the heart, allowing more relaxation. However, with these added features obviously comes increased cost and the features on offer and not relevant for everyone so our advice isn't to jump in the top of the range model as it might not be relevant to you.

So, as we've seen there are a large range of different chairs, each offering different levels of sophistication to match the needs of the user. The key is to match your needs to the product and get the lift chair which is perfect for you!

For a lot of people, standing up is quite difficult and lift chairs can make this easier. Some of the most popular are Golden Lift Chairs and Pride Lift Chairs.
