For people looking into a career path of management consultancy may not realise the competition that lies out there with a number of would-be consultants just itching their way into taking on the role. This position is not for someone who has only just managed to come out of academia but is open to those who have valuable experience in management and an impressive resume that is unmatched by anyone else.

This is not a simple managerial role but involves plenty of communication with clients and providing objective advice, expertise and special skills all aimed at increasing or maximising financial success. They are also needed to help expand a company and improve its performance in the market with their existing client base. Management consultancy primarily focuses on using strategies, building a solid structure to the approach and management of the organisation.

The consultant will need to be extremely sharp and be able to spot or anticipate problems or issues that may befall the company. In a management consultancy role you will need to have a good understanding of the organisation, the market that they work in, identify and implement any options and solutions. The consultant will also need to provide recommendations on new options and point the organisation or provide resources that help to implement the solutions.

Most consultants will work in various and diverse fields or services that could be in the financial sector, marketing, business strategy, information technology, e-business, human resources and more. Management consultancy firms will also vary in size, some are large firms that are renowned for a specific type of service to smaller or niche companies. Others could have different sectors housing consultants of varying specialist skills and industry knowledge.

No two days are the same when in the management consultancy field as the service could be complex and difficult. The nature of the consultant's role is essentially project focussed and entrepreneurial, making each project different and varying in length. Some projects can take a matter of days or weeks, and others may take months or years to develop. This is all dependant on the demands of the client, as the project could involve a single management consultant, whilst others may need a team of consultants working together. They can also be based on site or in different places at any time, which can increase the length of time.

Those who can demonstrate a strong leadership skill, excellent communication skills, work well under tight deadlines and have a specialised skill are more likely to be considered. One would need to have gathered plenty of researching skills and work experience, as well as the necessary qualifications and right attitude to the role, before they can even be considered for a position of this level.
