This Friday saw the sentence of O.J.Simpson for up to 33 years in prison by a Las Vegas judge. He was convicted on charges of armed robbery of sports memorabilia as Simpson stormed into a Las Vegas hotel room on September 13, 2007. However before the sentence could be pronounced, the football Hall of Famer who is 61 year old, apologized for his deeds and described the action as a mistake which was not intended to harm anyone. He further tried to justify his actions by describing it as a foolish act. But his plea for compassion was rejected by the judge as the judge described the act as an act which involved much more than stupidity.

Simpson further tried to justify his actions by saying he was only trying to take back some sports memorabilia and the things which he wanted to retrieve also included his first wifes wedding ring. The court room saw Simpson holding back his tears and saying "I didn't want to steal anything from anyone. … I'm sorry, sorry."

Glass, made popular for her no non-sense judgments and tough sentences confused many of the attorneys present in the court room with her series of complex sentences and many were not sure of the time which Simpson got for his sentence. However, it was later made clear that Simpson was supposed to serve for 33 years. It was added by the Judge clerk Elana Roberto, that he could be eligible for a parole after a period of 9 years.

The judge made it very clear by reiterating the fact that this sentence was not influenced by Simpsons 1995 acquittal case in any way. In 1995, Simpson was sentenced on charges of murder of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson as well as her friend named Ronald Goldman. Judge Jackie Glass later confirmed that Simpson will be incarcerated at least till the year 2017. This sentence is a lesson for all the other athletes who do not realize that even they are accountable by law. However, a very noteworthy fact here is that, Simpson is one of the very few athletes in American history to experience and suffer such a drastic fall.

It is no more a secret that Simpson will be 70 years old, before even he could try for a parole. Prosecutors are of the opinion that it is very unlikely that he will only serve the minimum period. It is very unfortunate for a man who was once the face of America, to enter into his 60s with the thoughts and possibilities of a life which has to end in a prison.
