Success in bodybuilding comes from a unique combination of what is the same, and what is different. Exercises that build the foundation of muscle mass, such as the bench press, military press, deadlift, chin, and squat, must be completed several times per month for years in order to make substantial muscle gains. At the same time, however, we also know that it is the result of finding new ways to surprise and shock the muscle group that new progress is made. It's a bit misleading we find success when we do more of the same, but do it differently? The truth is, some movements do need to be completed for years at a time in order to build a foundation of muscle. And, at the same time, variety in our training does lead to muscle confusion, in which the muscle never quite adapts to the workload we throw at it. As a result, we grow.
