Both Williams' sisters continue to stun the tennis world by their constant amazing performances in singles and doubles tournaments as they keep escalating in the world rankings. Venus and Serena have won several WTA titles as well as Grand Slams in Australia, Wimbledon and the United States. More recently at the Olympic Games in Beijing China both were amongst the best seeded female players, Venus managing to go all the way to the quarterfinals the same as her sister Serena who is only one year younger.

The 24-years-old Serbian, Jelena Jankovic, won her first title of 2009, by beating the Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro in the final of the WTA Marbella Open with a final score of 6-3, 3-6, and 6-3. This is the 10th title of the Serbian in her career and the first since last October 2008. The Serbian has not played at her best in the first tournaments of this season, but with this triumph Jankovic is gaining some confidence back, which could help her to increase her tennis and improve her ranking position. The Serb has faced the Suarez in three occasions and has always been the winner.

The French of 23-years old Gilles Simon upset the No.2 of the world Roger Federer in the first game of the Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai by beating him 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. This is Simon’s first time at the year-end tournament and this victory surprised everyone, not only by the way he played against Federer but by proving everyone he didn’t came to Shanghai to just participate, he is competing for the title.

The annual tournament that is held at Miami, also known as the Sony Ericsson Open or Miami Masters will be taking place this week at the Tennis Center at Crandon Park. The tournament, that has a final prize of $4.5 million and gathers the best of both men and women players of the world, is as well one of the most important tennis tournaments of the year, besides the Grand Slams, under the categories ATP Masters 1000 on the ATP calendar and Premier Mandatory in the WTA .

The American tennis player of 27 years old, Serena Williams, was very successful in her first game of the Australian Open by beating the Chinese Yuan Meng 6-3, 6-2 this Tuesday at the Rod Laver Arena. Her game performance was slower than usual due to the heated weather conditions of the early afternoon, but she did really well even with the high temperatures of this summer at Melbourne. The American played conservatively and took her time to control the tempo of the game, even though she made 31 unforced errors in attempts to shorten the points.

The No.2 of the world and 27-years-old, the Swiss Roger Federer, is ready to start his next tournament at Indian Wells. The Swiss has not play since his loss against the Spaniard Rafael Nadal at the Australian Open in January due to a back injury. Federer had to drop the Dubai Championship and the Davis Cup while he recovered from his injury.

Serena Williams beat her sister Venus Williams at the semifinals of the Sony Ericsson Open yesterday on a very interesting match, where Serena demonstrated again why she is the No. 1 seed of the World. The game ended with a 6-4, 3-6 and 6-3 making Serena reach the final and accomplish the record that Steffi Graf had of 5 titles at Key Biscayne, completing six titles in the last eight years.

The 5-time Grand Slam champion and currently No.1 of the world, Rafael Nadal, was able to maintain his unbelievable record of not losing a set in this tournament by beating Fernando Gonzalez in great way 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. The game lasted a little less than 2 hours, which was not as long as everyone expected for this game, especially because everyone though that the battle between this two players was going to be more fierce. However, the Spaniard played incredibly good, hitting 33 winners with amazing power shots from different angles and touch, varying speeds and heights.

The Spaniard of 22-years-old and No.1 of the world, Rafael Nadal had a great performance in the second round of Indian Wells by beating the German Michael Berrer 6-2, 6-1. The game was well-played by the Spaniard, who did not have any difficulties at it since the German didn’t challenge Nadal in any way. The No.1 of the world will face the Russian Dmitry Tursunov in the third round, which will be his second match on the tournament, since he received a bye in the first round. Tursunov defeated the American Michael Russell in a tough game 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 in the early morning of Sunday.

The current No.3 of the world and Serbian Novak Djokovic conquered his first title of 2009 by beating the Spaniard David Ferrer in straight sets 7-5, 6-3 at the Dubai Championship this past Saturday. This is Djokovic’s 12th title of his career and it places him closer to the No.2 spot of the rankings, which is owned by the Swiss Roger Federer. The No.1 of the world Rafael Nadal and the No.2 of the world Roger Federer, dropped the tournament before it started due to injuries, while Andy Murray withdraw in the middle of the tournament due to a virus infection that will keep him out of the Davis Cup as well.
